Radio Radio brings Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes back for more rockabilly fun tonight. Tomorrow, We Are Hex celebrates the release of their new CD “Hail The Goer.”

The Vollrath has The Founders, Emulus, EdWord in my Pocket tonight and Deals Gone Bad with New York to Nowhere tomorrow.

The White Rabbit Cabaret features performances from Hassenpfeffer both Friday and Saturday night.

If such bawdy entertainment isn’t for you, consider the Blue Skies Big Band over at the Fountain Square Theater for Swing Night.

Arthur’s Music hosts a bluegrass jam Saturday afternoon – they note that well-behaved dogs are welcome, but still will not be allowed to play. All they want to play is nu-metal, anyway.

Finally, there’s jazz at Maria’s Pizza tonight and lounge music at the Brass Ring all weekend long. Enjoy!

Last year, some friends and I sat under the awning of a now-defunct local establishment and cheering the participants of the Fountain Square Art Parade. We were rather lonely, in that it was the wettest, coldest 4th of July I can remember, and the parade had shrunk a bit in both paraders and spectators. Nevertheless, roller derby girls, vintage fire trucks, and weirdly costumed individuals made their way through the streets of Fountain Square (if with a quicker pace than expected) to keep alive a new activity hoping to transform into a tradition. What else would give you the excuse to traipse past your neighbors in full lawn gnome regalia?

Quiet, Halloween. This isn’t about you.

Those of an artistic and creative bent should probably check out this year’s event, scheduled to coincide with the Fountain Square Art Festival and Masterpiece in a Day on September 18th. Hopefully the weather cooperates and we can see just how weird the entries can be. Between this year’s 4th of July celebrations (complete with black market trunk sales of fireworks) and the dancing bear/fairy video I saw shot on my street a few weeks ago, however, it make take a little effort to stand out from the local flair. I encourage a hearty and well-fought competition. Have at it.

I’m performing at Theater on the Square this weekend, but I’ll head back to the Square afterwards for all the festivities. Have a happy holiday!

Tonight, take in the singer/songwriter stylings of Andy Davis, Andrew Belle and Seth Glier. Tomorrow, things get much louder with Blue Luster and Rotovox.

Tonight at the Vollrath, there’s a whole scad of indie rock with Turbo Fruits, Via Audio, DOUG, and the Broderick. Tomorrow, it’s Go Slowpoke, Slothpop, and Our Imaginary Friends. Sunday wraps up the weekend with a big My Old Kentucky Blog show featuring Woven Bones, Burnt Ones, and We Are Hex.

Like things a little more traditional? The Stardusters play Swing Night at the Fountain Square Theater this evening. And there’s jazz at Maria’s Pizza and lounge music at the Brass Ring.

There are also a couple more eateries to experience in the Square neighborhood – Pure Eatery offers simple fare based on great salads and sandwiches, and the Square Rootz Deli mixes up comfort food and some healthy alternatives. And Santorini’s Greek Kitchen celebrates 9 years in business this Sunday with a big to-do, including an outdoor buffet and big band music. Why? Because they are geniuses at what they do.

First, only an outbreak of World-Cup-Bola (with less eye-bleeding, but still no less infectious) could make Radio Radio open it’s doors at 7 or so each morning this weekend. But they are indeed doing so. Of course, that leaves little time for music, which means the only show is Saturday night. Then, the Gasoline Rally scooter folk mingle with the paying public to hear the Leisure Kings and the Playboy Psychonauts. I truly believe that at least one member of the latter band will spend a good 20 hours in Radio Radio this weekend. Trust me.

Over at the Vollrath, they have the Lipstick Dynamite, They’ve Shot Flanigan, and Secrets Between Sailors. Tomorrow brings the Love Language, Gold Motel, Quick Said the Bird, and Accordions, and Sunday finds City Sweethearts, Brothers Gross, and Charlie and the Skunk taking the stage.

And, of course, there’s live jazz at Maria’s Pizza tonight and live lounge music at the Brass Ring all weekend long. There’s even a bluegrass jam at Arthur’s Music Saturday afternoon. Finally, if you wish, the Pretty Things Peep Show Burlesque Side Show takes place at the White Rabbit Cabaret Saturday night. That’s enough to do this weekend. Pick something and go with it.

Also, there’s a Playboy Psychonauts show this very Saturday at Radio Radio, kicking off around 9pm or so. What makes this show different? Scooters. Tons of them. This show also features the Leisure Kings, and the whole thing takes place during the Gasoline Rally, a three-day festival for scooter enthusiasts. Meaning, of course, that you’ll get a healthy dose of Vespas and mod culture if you drop by for this event.

It’s a busy week for Radio Radio, given that they’re open for all of the World Cup soccer games as well. I’m not sure Fountain Square knows what to do with all of this weird stuff going on at the club down the street, but I, for one, welcome our new futbol-and-motoring-loving overlords.

Radio Radio has Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit tonight – all Drive-By Truckers fans take note. Tomorrow, Warpaint and Soft Speaker take the stage.

The Vollrath presents Green Grocer tonight and Burning Hotels, Eric and the Happy Thoughts, the Perennials, and Midwest Beat tomorrow.

The White Rabbit Cabaret showcases Hassenpfeffer tonight. Tomorrow, they bring in dear friend Cara Jean Wahlers and Grover Parido along with Lou Stant.

As always, there’s live jazz at Maria’s Pizza tonight and lounge music at the Brass Ring all weekend long. Enjoy.
