Fountain Square Music This Weekend

Radio Radio has big doings this weekend - Sebadoh and Mazes drop by tonight, and Creepin' Charley and the Boneyard Orchestra reunite tomorrow for their yearly show. Endiana is also on that bill.

Tonight's Vollrath show was canceled due to venue closure, but starting tomorrow all scheduled shows move to Indy's Jukebox. That lineup includes Brothers Gross, The Mustachios, 9th Circle Symphony, Black Arrow, and Mr. Clit and the Pink Cigarettes. Check with the venue website for potential conflicts, though. Don't know how all of the shows are going to shake out.

It's Swing Night in Fountain Square tonight with the Sunset Stomp Jazz Band. And don't forget about the regulars!

  • Live jazz at Maria's Pizza
  • Live lounge at the Brass Ring
  • Live acoustic music at the Red Lion tomorrow
And, of course, this is the last weekend for the run of Cabaret Poe - two more shows (tonight and tomorrow), and they're likely to sell out. Get your tickets while you can - this show will NOT be back next year.

New IMN Podcast and Farewell Vollrath

The new IMN podcast is up - download it or listen at the site or on WFYI HD2, Thursdays at 4pm and 10pm.

So I won't be mentioning the Vollrath on Fridays anymore, simply because there isn't a Vollrath anymore. The building is closed and the liquor license is headed to a Super Bowl entertainment speculator. Comments I've seen from the talent booker indicate they're trying to reschedule the shows at Indy's Jukebox - this seems like the most reliable calendar I've found for them, but there seems to be some gaps in there. Best of luck to the Vollrath folks, and sorry to see you go.

Indiana State Fair Stage Collapse Project

Please take a minute to check out this project and consider donating to the fund to aid the victims of the stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair earlier this year. Thanks to PJ Christie and Indyrok Media for putting it together, and thanks to the good folks in Loretta for letting me donate my version of their song to the cause. Hopefully, this helps ease the burden for those affected by this tragedy. Thanks!

Fountain Square Music This Weekend and Still More Cabaret Poe

Radio Radio features Vulgar Boatmen and The Lovemeknots tonight (along with a premiere of the VB doc "Drive Somewhere"). Tomorrow, take in Joshua James and Honey Honey.

I can't count how many bands go through the Vollrath this weekend. Well, I can, but it makes me tired. Tonight, there's Dastard Lee, Eric Blair and the Absolute Nothings, Second Hand Theory, Rooster Well, and Plain As Day. Tomorrow, you can see Festival of The Damned, Threat Level, Biorhythm, Last Nail In, and The Elixirs. Finally, Sunday brings in Creepersin, Takin In, and Protest for Pluto.

The White Rabbit Cabaret features Cymbals Eat Guitars and Hooray For Earth tomorrow.

And, of course, the regulars:

  • Live jazz at Maria's Pizza
  • Live lounge at the Brass Ring
  • Live acoustic music at the Red Lion tomorrow
Cabaret Poe continues its run today through October 29th - see it before it goes away forever. I can't count that long, either.

New IMN Podcast and Restringing my 5-String

The new IMN podcast is up - download it or listen at the site or on WFYI HD2, Thursdays at 4pm and 10pm.

I've been threatening to take my 5-string bass from a low B to a high C string for a bit - it's a bass that doesn't get a ton of use, and the neck seems unusually sensitive to weather and needs more adjustment (especially in the summer) than I'm always comfortable with. After my last round of tweaking and the recent cold weather, though, the bass seems to have calmed a bit. I'm going to take it on a few shows this week to see what I think, but I'l still considering the move. I like what Matthew Garrison has been doing with a similarly stringed bass, and my move towards more solo songs and looping (plus the chordal studies I took from Todd Johnson) make it seem a good move.

I'm just cheap and don't want to run through a set of strings, I suppose. 🙂 The only set I've found for 5-strings with a high C are the Fodera Matthew Garrison sets (I'm sure they're out there, but my research continues), so I'll give it a shot when I can throw away some string money.

Quick Thoughts on the Animoog

After some weirdness getting the app to run initially (no audio and weird controls) that has since been sorted out, I'm struck by a few things:

  1. Did you ever imagine you could buy ANYTHING functional from Moog for $.99? Ever?
  2. The sound is incredible and quite useful for prominent synth work - no real experience with pads so far.
  3. The interaction with this synth is AMAZING. Volume and aftertouch on the keys, touch knobs and controls, a functional X/Y pad, envelopes with draggable edit points - this really works well with the touchscreen. You will not want to use a MIDI controller with this app, simply because you're losing out on about half the functionality.
  4. I REALLY want apps to interact more now, 'cause I'd love to record this live to the looper. There is a recorder built into the synth that exports in AudioCopy/AudioPaste format, so it can still happen within the box. But live playing would be nice.
  5. That $.99 price only lasts for less than a month now, so act quickly if you're interested.

Fountain Square Music This Weekend

Tomorrow, go see Festival of The Damned, Threat Level, Biorhythm, Last Nail In, and The Elixirs. Sunday ends it all with Creepersin, Takin In, and Protest for Pluto.

The White Rabbit Cabaret presents the pianoke of NOISE! tonight and Currypalooza (with Born Again Floozies and more) tomorrow night.

It's Fountain Square Swing Night with Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie Band tonight, and don't forget the regulars:

New IMN Podcast and More SoftStep

The new IMN podcast is up - download it or listen on the site or on WFYI HD2, Thursdays at 4pm and 10pm. Incidentally, this is show 320, and it looks like we'll end up at around show 331.

And then I'll have to find something else to write about on Thursdays.

It's easy to go deep into the rabbit hole with the SoftStep programming software - I'd been using the factory-standard toggle preset in both Reason and Everyday Looper for transport controls and loop triggering. However, I wanted to get a mix of toggles and pressure-sensitive pads on the pedal in order make full use of it in Reason. I ended up going with the Easy Editor provided by the SoftStep folks - it locks the pedal into a single setting, but it gave me the mixed use I need and was really easy to edit and save. I also turned off the backlight per the instructions to eliminate some hum coming through the system. So SoftStep now controls the iPad and Everyday Looper with the audio signal coming into the iRig via the headphone jack and makes for a nice, transportable setup. Toss in a few effects pedals and I'm ready to go. On the Reason side, the additional pads control settings on the Echo device (playing around with analog-style dub delay on the bass is just so much fun) and trigger different loops from the Dr. Octorex machine. Which also makes me happy - who needs a band anymore?

Fountain Square Music This Weekend

Bobby Long and Dale Lawrence drop in on Radio Radio tonight. Singer/songwriter goodness.

Things start out a little quiet (volume-wise) at the Vollrath tonight with Santah, Army Navy, and The Bonesetters. Then it all goes loud with Rituals, Soulsik, Fleshsuit, and Protest for Pluto. That trend continues Sunday with Mortals, The Dockers, Late August, and Chinaski.

Calvin Fletcher Coffee Company celebrates their two-year anniversary tomorrow with a whole bunch of music.

Big Car Gallery brings in Tribraco, Tubax, and Melt-Face Sunday for electronic experimentation.

And take a look at these folks, too:

  • Live jazz at Maria's Pizza
  • Live lounge at the Brass Ring
  • Live acoustic music at the Red Lion tomorrow
Finally, Cabaret Poe continues this evening. Last weekend's sold-out opener was great, and it's time to get back into the pit. Literally. There's a pit.

New IMN Podcast – For Now

The new IMN podcast is up - download it or listen at the site or on WFYI-HD2, Thursdays at 4pm or 10pm.

Until the end of the year, that is. Then, it's over. We're shutting down the site and making it an archive, with no new content. And that includes the podcast. It's had a good 6+ year run, but it's time to move on to something else. Get 'em while you can, folks.
