The 2×4 Bass

Has there ever been a true evaluation of the tonal properties of 2x4s? Somebody obviously had the idea a long time ago to use such wood to craft low-end-oriented instruments, and yet I’m not sure we really know more today than we did then. The only homemade bass-like instrument I’ve ever played was made from PVC pipe, and it gave an . . . interesting fretless tone. Plus, you could use it to route water under your sink until the next rehearsal. The 2×4 is unexplored territory for me, though. However, it won’t be wood coming from Gibson. For shame, Gibson. Yet another reason to stick with my Fenders and MusicMan Stingray . . .

Y’know, someone makes a 2×4 snare that’s supposed to be pretty nifty. In case you were wondering, it’s steam bent to make it drum shape, not some crazy long stick drum. :)

The Home Depot Custom Shop has been busy. How long does it take to steam-bend a 2×4?
