The 2×4 Bass
Has there ever been a true evaluation of the tonal properties of 2x4s? Somebody obviously had the idea a long time ago to use such wood to craft low-end-oriented instruments, and yet I'm not sure we really know more today than we did then. The only homemade bass-like instrument I've ever played was made from PVC pipe, and it gave an . . . interesting fretless tone. Plus, you could use it to route water under your sink until the next rehearsal. The 2x4 is unexplored territory for me, though. However, it won't be wood coming from Gibson. For shame, Gibson. Yet another reason to stick with my Fenders and MusicMan Stingray . . .
