Free Music From WFMU!
WMFU already puts together some fabulous programming (Downtown Soulville, I'm looking at you), and now they've expanded into the "music vault" business with the Free Music Archive. It's not quite the unreleased songs stored by Prince, but it does represent a broad selection of music from a cross-section of curators, like WMFU and fellow independent station KEXP. I found some live EPMD cuts on there at first glance, and I'm looking forward to digging deeper to see what they have. Thanks, WMFU!
The Prince iPod
I've had to do some quick playlist-fu and switch files between my phone and iPod to get the contents of my iTunes library fully mobile and ready to go. It took some effort, but I've managed to stave off the purchase of another device for at least another 7 GB worth of music.
Even when the time comes, it probably won't be the Prince iPod, though. He's got the concept of giving the fans something unique and valuable in order to sell the music. The price point, though, is what kills it.
More like pulverizes it and pounds it deep into the dark, wind-blasted earth.
Sad.
Fountain Square Music This Weekend
The weekend schedule at Radio Radio is a little light, so make the trip on Monday to hear William Fitzsimmons, Rosi Golan, and Chase Coy.
Deano's Vino has Sour Mash tonight and Wilson and Company tomorrow. Tim Brickley's swing band plays the Fountain Square Theater tonight, and Frank Glover and Claude Sifferlen is at Maria's Pizza.
And though it's not this weekend, there are quite a few hardcore shows happening at the Murphy Building later this month, so welcome to the neighborhood. I'll try to wander by the doors and get a schedule soon.
And that's it. Enjoy the weekend, all.
Todd Rundgren at my Alma Mater
The lecture was advertised as "Music, Technology and Risk-Taking," and I guess I kind of wanted to take out the first comma and hear more about the technical side of music production from a trend-setter. It turned more into a retrospective of Rundgren's life with some techie talk sprinkled in - not what I was expecting, but still entertaining. The biggest thing I took from the talk was that when asked his advice on making a living in the music business, this famed record producer, engineer and technological innovator replied "Play live!" without hesitation. It was also interesting to contrast his take on the neutrality of music recording technology vs. his disdain for cellphones, Twitter and blogging (brought up while I was tweeting, ironically enough) as technologies that engender too much talking and not enough listening.
I didn't get the chance to stay on campus long, but it was nice to get some dinner at Marvin's and listen to the metal show on WGRE.
Speaking of radio, the new IMN podcast is online. Listen at the site or on WFYI.
Is it really worth the extra 30 cents?
I'm happy that iTunes has ditched all DRM at this point, but the new pricing structure is a little weird, and I'm not sure how it's going to affect the store. The extra 30 cents from premium tracks isn't just directed at new releases - it's applicable for tracks from The Who, Nirvana and more. Link that with comparison shopping on Amazon and other services, and it just doesn't make much sense. Unless it was capitulation for keeping major label tracks on the iTunes service at all, but even still it seems a little wrong.
In the meantime, I'm having fun playing with BoinxTV. Every video looks more official when you add a crawl and bulletin graphics to it, even when it's just the output of your laptop camera.
A Little Worn Out
Aside from carrying a new amp through a torrential downpour, the weekend turned out fairly well musically. Highlights included the Playboy Psychonauts at a Muncie house party (I threw in the Bass Whammy pedal on this gig, just for fun, and the chorus sound fit in well with some of the songs) and the Hold Steady show down in Bloomington. I'm not sure there's a better just-that-much-fun rock show out there right now than those boys. Aside from the occasional problems with the PA, it was a great event.
After a little recovery time, I'm going to play a little bit with Pd, just 'cause I don't have enough to do and I'm a little curious about this particular bit of open source music software.
Fountain Square Music This Weekend
Radio Radio has Bigger Than Elvis Saturday evening. Big Car Gallery has Todd Bracik: Audio, Assemblage and Video. Deano's Vino has Andy DeCarlo & The Travelin' Hillbillies tonight and Brian Hodge tomorrow. And there's an open mic night at the Fountain Square Library tonight, along with live jazz at Maria's Pizza.
New IMN Podcast Up
This one was co-hosted by Rob G., back from the Chillicothe Recording Workshop, so we geeked out on that a bit. We also played a Hold Steady track, in prep for the show in Bloomington this weekend. Tickets purchased, will attend.
Oh, the podcast? Download it here or listen at the site or WFYI. Sorry.
