Room In The Inn

The latest Bass Player magazine newsletter brought sad news in the form of a house fire at Dave Pomeroy's house.  Pomeroy is both a fantastic session bassist and president of Nashville's AFM chapter, and the fire damaged both his house and took the life of his dog.  However, as quoted in the newsletter, “I’ll be fine. I’ve got insurance and I’ve got friends. If somebody wants to help me, just be good to Room In The Inn and homeless people everywhere.”

So, here's a link for more info on Room In The Inn, and here's another to a Pomeroy composition, "The Day The Bass Players Took Over The World."

Microsoft Songsmith

When Apple's Garageband first came out, it was little more than a pleasant distraction.  It could record basic tracks and make some interesting sounds, but it didn't compete with more fully featured programs.  As it evolved, it became a much better alternative, and I can actually see using it now on a regular basis (minus crappy Sting guitar lessons in iLife '09).

I suppose it's possible that this new Songsmith program could undergo the same form of evolution and grow into something useful, and the automatic creation of backing tracks from a melody line is an interesting feature.  But right now, this graft of Band-In-A-Box and a basic recorder suffers from a huge flaw.

The music used to advertise it is terrible.  And it's not just kinda bad.  It's mall-organ-store bad.

If you're selling something that can be actively perceived in the commercial, you should probably make sure the music in the ad sounds good.  After all, that's what you're selling - music.  This ad brings along a basic MIDI wonder and uses it as a calling card.

The description of the software is intriguing, and it's clearly targeted at casual users as opposed to pros.  Still, I can't wait to hear the mangled sounds that end up coming out of this program.  Pair it with some of the worst "American Idol" first-rounders for extra fun.

My playing is a little punchy . . .

I haven't yet encountered the video game character that demands a tribute on my pickguard yet, but the good folks at GoNintendo have found their candidate in Piston Honda.  Can't tell if it's a knockoff Jazz or the real thing, but it certainly looks good enough for the stage.  Or the ring.

Fountain Square Music For This Weekend

Radio Radio has Those Darlins, Kentucky Nightmare and Dorsey tonight.  Tomorrow brings Miles Nielsen, Healing Sixes and Dark Matter Halos.

Sam's Saloon features Lollipop Factory, Marionette Rebellion and Gay Black Republican tonight, and The Highway and Fairview play tomorrow.

I need to get more details, but Maria's Pizza (right on the Square) is hosting live jazz at some point.  The Fountain Square Theater has their swing night tonight as well.  Enjoy!

New IMN Podcast Up and iTunes Fallout

The new podcast episode is up and running - download it here or listen at the site or WFYI.

Also, I wrote about the general iTunes move to DRM-free music on the other blog, and most of the articles I've read have been praising the move as an overdue move in the right direction (except for the 30-cent markup to buy out of the DRM for existing tracks).  One of the other criticisms, though (and I don't remember where it is - I'll link if I can remember), came as a response to the decision to sell the tracks as 256Kbps AAC tracks instead of converting to MP3.  While the latter format is more universal, the former provides better sound quality at equal bits rates.  Additionally, now that the DRM is gone, it should be an easy upgrade for other media players and programs to handle it.  I guess I just don't see that part as a penalty.

I do have to figure out whether it's worth the cost to de-DRM, though.  I've not run into any problems with authorization yet, so I'm leaning towards no.

Insert “Hot Bass Guitar” Pun Here

There's nothing wrong with the classic Zippo (I don't smoke, and there are still a couple around the house for sentimental value).  Still, it'd be hard to pass up a bass guitar lighter, and somebody has made the call to get one.  At the time of this printing, there's only one bid, so you budding artist types have time to break out the butane and get one made.  I'd recommend the classic P-Bass shape - simple and effective.

I don’t need much of a reason to hate Sting.

His general temprement and predeliction towards lute albums take care of that.

But man, now he's got to turn traitor, too?

The new Garageband in iLife '09 features a few music lessons.  And that's great - I'm always in favor of music lessons.

Except when they involve Sting and a guitar.

He's famous for his work in a group where he played bass (or got the heck out of the way and let Daryl Jones play bass for solo work, which is perfectly acceptable).

Now we get to let him prattle on about the guitar?  Joy.

New Fun Happy Toys!

Big Car Gallery's installation for the last First Friday included a couple Buddha Machines and the iPhone emulator used to create some interesting noise loops for the accompanying pictures and sticky notes (you had to be there for the full effect).  I'm playing around with this and some other apps - never did I think my cell phone would be a random music compositional tool.

The new amp is coming along swimmingly, too.  I can't turn it above 2 for fear of damaging my house's foundation, and the control panel can be daunting at times.  Still, I think this Trace Elliot combo should handle the bulk of my playing needs quite nicely.

And, just for fun, NPR tossed a complete streaming concert from Hiromi's Sonicbloom online for your listening please.  They were fantastic when I saw them at Indy's Jazz Fest a couple of years ago.  It's great fusion that doesn't make you feel bad because you're listening to fusion.

Fountain Square Music This Weekend

VH-1 Classic was just showing the abominable Patty Smyth version of "Downtown Train" and then went dark, as if to say "Screw this!"  The new year is already looking up.

Radio Radio has Bigger Than Elvis tomorrow night, and they bring in James Intveld on Monday.  Did you like the singing in "Cry-baby?"  This guy did it, and you should be there.

Sam's Saloon features Kory Quinn & The Comrades and Ten Foot Band tomorrow night. TBA is scheduled for tomorrow, but I bet they cancel.

It's First Friday this evening, so there's plenty of activity going 'round the square.  Shake off your hangovers and enjoy
