Fountain Square Music This Weekend

Radio Radio welcomes back Melissa Ferrick and opener Coyote Grace tonight. Solo acoustic fans, take note.

Sam's Saloon features Jason and the Punknecks and Goddamn Gallows tonight and Whitey Morgan and the 78s and TBA Saturday. Fans of the loud and/or the rockabilly, this is where you'll be ending up.

Deano's Vino has the Shirtless Biddles tonight. Tomorrow, all they'll say is "Let us surprize you!" It couldn't be TBA - they're playing down the road the same night. Questions abound.

Group these with Maxwell and Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos at the Murat (same show, not the same venue) tonight and TV On The Radio with The Dirtbombs at the Vogue Sunday, and this is quite the full weekend. Choose wisely.

New Podcast Up and Broad Ripple Music Fest

Enjoy the new IMN podcast via download or the various sites that host it.

It's a little outside of my normal base of operations, but I must make note of the upcoming Broad Ripple Music Fest (taking place next Saturday in and around the general Broad Ripple area). It's notable for multiple reasons, including the fact that all of these music events are donating some of the evening's proceeds to various charities. The kickoff show on Friday is a huge event as well, including some of Indianapolis' most notable music acts. And then there's my friend and former bandmate Kit Malone coming out of self-imposed retirement for a show at the Boulevard Place Cafe. All wonderful reasons to attend.

IMN will be giving away some wristbands for the show, so check out the site in the next couple of days. It'll be worth it even if you have to buy, though. Trust me.

Digging Out

I'm buried in back episodes of podcasts - my listening at work habits changed, leaving file upon file languishing on my iPod. That left said device filled up, so I'm having to tweak the settings to make room or move them on to another device for listening later.

The problem with all of the great podcast content available is that there is an avalanche of it (and that's not considering all of the not-so-great content available as well), and I'm feeling . . . not guilty, but just out of the loop. It's not as embarrassing as having the paper stack up on the porch or anything, but I'm still trying to rectify the situation as quickly as possible.

Next week's trip to New Orleans should create some transit time that I can use to catch up, but I'm also afraid I'm just going to have to skip a few and re-prioritize the rest. The indie-pop so often recommended by the NPR shows can take a back seat easily - I'm starting to wonder if they get any other recordings in.

Playboy Psychonaut News

We spent most of last Thursday evening recording a rehearsal tape for a sub bass player (I'll be in New Orleans for the Voodoo Music Festival - the trip was already booked when the gig came along) and taking promo photos for the press packet. The end of the month is busy with three gigs in close proximity - fezzes must appeal to the Halloween spirit.

The group has also added dancer/percussionists Betty and Veronica - they graced the stage at the IndyFringe festival show and have become permanent members that will also be at the upcoming shows. Indianapolis and Lafayette music lovers, take note and mark down the gigs on the front page or at the MySpace site.

And I'm going to drop the laptop for the Psychonauts and use more pedal effects - funky foot pedals just seem to fit the nature of this group. There are also some projects coming down the pike that call for more technology, so it's sticking around.

Hands Off The Volume, iPhone

A quick little blurb in the latest issue of Tape Op caught my eye and finally brought some things together for me. The writer was having problems with Pro Tools meters being dragged down, and it turns out the culprit is the iPhone. Transmissions from the device were pulling down the meters, causing the mixes to go off. This isn't some app gone wrong - it's the normal functioning of the device that's doing it.

As I'm not an avid (bad pun, sorry) Pro Tools user, I didn't notice the effects there. Where I did encounter this phenomenon was on my older iPod. If the two were in close proximity (say, my pocket) and the older iPod was playing while the iPhone was connected to a network (it wouldn't happen while in airplane mode), the volume on my older iPod would jump around erratically. I can't remember if the data transmissions from my old phone did that as well, but it's definitely happening here.

Add that to the lovely interference AT&T's EDGE network can add to audio (I've had at least one video's audio track ruined by a rogue Blackberry), and it makes sense to leave phones off when you're recording anything, either remotely or in the studio. They're just to unpredictable, whether they're turning down audio or adding unwanted noise.

Fountain Square Music This Weekend

Radio Radio has a big show this evening with Justin Townes Earle and a "Songwriter In The Round" opener with Mandy Marie, Cliff Snyder, and Joe Pug. Tickets are $10, and there was a presale for this show, so arrive early.

Sam's Saloon has Phoenix On The Fault Line, Ready The Destroyer, and Nicotine Poetic this evening for your weekly dose of the heavy heavy. The ever-popular TBA makes an appearance Saturday.

Deano's Vino has Wilson & Company tonight and the Half Step Sisters tomorrow. And it's Swing Night at the Fountain Square Theater this evening.

Also, to make up for yesterday's missed post, the new episode of the IMN Podcast is up. Download it here or listen at the site or WFYI. This week was the "hard" launch of their new HD2 channel, of which we're proud to be a part of the programming lineup every Thursday at 4pm. Their new facilities are great, and the HD2 channel (which you can stream from their site if you don't own an HD radio) programs a lot of great music-oriented programs that you can't necessarily get on their analog counterpart.

Laptop Book Cover

Sorry, something just hit me as I was looking at the Amazon entry for the laptop book.

Is it wrong for me to see this cover and hope that the laptop would slap on a cartoon-ish top hat and start singing about how a bill becomes a law? It's got to be hanging around on those steps for a reason.

Also, so far this week I've experienced Hungarian ska, been threatened with cannibalism, and played bingo.  This week has become the cosmic junk drawer.

High-Priced Bass Porn

Carl Thompson 8-String BassCarl Thompson basses are probably best known for their association with Les Claypool, as well as some publicity from Stanley Clarke. I haven't actually played one yet because of the high price, relative rarity, and the long waiting list for the custom-built instruments. But this one just LOOKS beautiful, partly because of the great craftsmanship and because of the 8-string setup. Don't know where I'd use it, but I'd love the opportunity.

There's just not enough time in the world for all of these instruments.

This Pedal Gives My Bass Tone More Anonymous Snark

This isn't a review, as I've yet to get my hands on one of these to give it a test run (and I have been looking - my quest for ultimate bass distortion continues).  The name befuddles me, though.  Electro-Harmonix has always bestowed unique-yet-vaguely-descriptive names on their effects, sometimes with a clever in-joke buried in the subtext.  I just can't figure out where this one works, aside from a vague allusion to dialog with the drummer in their promo copy.  Distortion pedals have never assisted with bassist/drummer communication, at least in my experience.  Foul glares, animated hand signals, and the occasional bag of beef jerky have proven far more effective.

Owing to my wonderful experiences with the Q-Tron pedal I have, though, I'll give it a shot.  It's relatively inexpensive, and there's always room for new pedals.

As for some non-anonymous snark, here's a fun local story about getting hassled by The Man.  Read, evaluate, and act accordingly.  I'm boycotting, but the financial impact is quite minimal.

Fountain Square Music This Weekend

Radio Radio has Lonely China Day and the Post this evening and Bigger Than Elvis tomorrow.  Also, Little Cow graces the stage on Monday.  I know that isn't technically the weekend, but I'm making an exception for "Gypsy-tinged ska/rock/funk pop " bands travelling to the states from Hungary that have won prizes for soundtrack animation.  They're the only ones.  Make a note.

Sam's Saloon has Kendall Ludwig and Scott Bravo tonight.  Saturday brings Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby along with Revivial's normal dance party.

Big Car Gallery promises music with Debbie Reichard and Artur Silva's opening this music.  Check out the surprise.

Deano's Vino has Andy DeCarlo & The Travelin' Hillbillies tonight and The Last Drop Juggers tomorrow.

Also, the Wheeler Art Building will host a show featuring accalimed folk artist David Wilcox tonight - their theater will be an excellent place to hear his intimate music.

Can you tell it's First Friday yet?
