Holding Off For A Bit
I was joking about standing in line for Leopard today, but I think I'm going to hold off for a bit before upgrading my machines to the new Mac OS X. Any operating sytem is going to have a few bugs in the initial release, and I think I'll let somebody else take the hit on finding them. It's usually a good policy to wait until some updates have been done before going ahead with an install, just to see what goes wrong. Toss in some resource-hungry software like audio recording, and it could get even worse. Sometimes, it's best to stick with what works until the benefits outweigh the risk.
I'm also waiting for a new hard drive for the laptop. Nothing is wrong per se with this one, but it's getting a little crowded (about two-thirds full). Considering I'm going to have to Boot Camp my computer soon to help me write a new laptop book for Wiley, there's a definite need for more space. I also need it to run at 7200 rpm for any music needs, and the 200 GB drives in that range are finally at a decent price.

I took the plunnge and upgraded my MBP to Leopard over the weekend. The install went without a hitch. Office 2004 still works, as does Photoshop CS2 (haven’t tried any other CS2 apps yet), and Final Cut 2 works fine in my limited usage of it so far. I did take special care to make a complete bootable backup of my tiger install with SuperDuper, just in case. (especially since I use this machine for work too).
I think it’s a great improvement on the already rock-solid Tiger. There are a couple things I don’t like, such as the freaking new Dock, and the translucent menubar (WTF?), but overall it’s worth it. I would recommend waiting until any work-related apps you have installed have official Leopard-ready updates for them, just in case. i’m not even gonna consider upgrading our other machines at work until 10.5.1 at least, and we upgrade to Adobe CS2 (since those bastards at Adobe refuse to push out any updates for CS2 or eariier for Leopard)
Anyway, I’m really surprised at the lack of problems I’ve had since installing it about 5 days ago.

The reports of “blue screens” seem to be dying down a bit, so I’ll give it a shot as soon as the new hard drive is installed. Have you used Carbon Copy Cloner before, and if so, how does it compare to SuperDuper?

The blue screens were from people who had Unsanity’s APE hackware installed, either knowingly or via the use of Logitech’s mouse software. I’ve used CCC before, but that was a couple years ago. I really REALLY like SuperDuper for it’s features. I need to pay for it so I can get the additional features of incremental backups and stuff. But, the free version was perfect for creating complete bootable backups. Time Machine is good enough for me now in the backup arena.
WARNING: Parallels’ latest beta (supposedly Leopard-ready) has given me 2 kernel panics since I installed it yesterday. I’m seriously considering taking the loss and moving to VMWare Fusion.

Ordered my Leopard and iLife updates today, so I should know more next week. Your experience sounds encouraging, though.
I think I’m going to stick with Boot Camp for the drive. I don’t need to move back and forth that quickly anyway, and I’ll need to keep a Windows focus for the new laptop book anyway.
